As orientation activities got underway, Carthage welcomed nearly 900 new students, putting the fall 2023 first-year class on pace to become the College’s largest ever.

“You are not alone in this journey. We are a community that supports one another, celebrates each other’s successes, and provides a helping hand during times of struggle,” said Phillip Hunter ’24, president of Student Government. “Firebirds are united by our shared values, goals, and dreams, and together we will conquer any challenges that come our way.”

“Fitting in is overrated,” she said. “Embrace your unique qualities, interests, and passions. When you embrace your own uniqueness, deep and lasting friendships are soon to follow.”

Carthage President John Swallow gave a primer on Carthage traditions and Kenosha hot spots. He encouraged parents and other family members to visit as often as they’d like.

The entering class totaled 892 at the beginning of New Student Orientation (805 freshmen and 87 transfers). These students represent 24 U.S. states and nine other countries: Brazil, Colombia, Finland, France, Greece, Japan, Nigeria, Singapore, and South Africa.

When the final count is taken in early October, first-year enrollment will likely surpass the previous high of 833 in 2021. Preliminary figures also point to record diversity, with 35 percent of freshmen identifying as American Indian, Asian, Black, Hispanic, Pacific Islander, or multiracial.
